Tattoo Aftercare
Tattoo aftercare is the process of caring for a new tattoo to ensure it heals properly and maintains its appearance. Proper aftercare helps prevent infection, minimize scabbing, and preserve the tattoo's colors. Here are the general steps for tattoo aftercare:
Aftercare w/ Saran wrap
Initial Care:
-
Leave the bandage on for the recommended time (usually 2-4 hours, but follow your artist's instructions).
-
Wash your hands thoroughly before touching the tattoo.
-
Gently wash the tattoo with lukewarm water and mild, unscented soap. Do not scrub.
-
Pat the tattoo dry with a clean paper towel or let it air dry.
Ongoing Care:
-
Apply a thin layer of a recommended ointment (like Aquaphor or a tattoo-specific product) for the first few days.
-
After the first few days, switch to a fragrance-free moisturizer or lotion. Do this several times a day to keep the tattoo hydrated.
-
Avoid submerging the tattoo in water (baths, swimming pools, hot tubs) for at least two weeks.
-
Avoid exposing the tattoo to direct sunlight.
-
After it heals, use sunscreen to protect the tattoo.
General Tips:
-
Do not pick at scabs or peeling skin, as this can cause scarring and ink loss.
-
Wear loose, clean clothing to prevent irritation.
-
Avoid excessive sweating and activities that can cause friction on the tattooed area.
Signs of Infection:
-
Watch for signs of infection such as redness, swelling, pus, or increasing pain. If you notice any of these symptoms, contact your tattoo artist or a healthcare professional.
-
Following these steps will help ensure your tattoo heals well and looks great for years to come.
Aftercare w/ Dermishield (second skin)
Using a second skin (or transparent adhesive film) for tattoo aftercare is becoming increasingly popular. This method can offer a more convenient and effective healing process by creating a protective barrier over the tattoo. Here are the steps for aftercare with a second skin:

Application of Second Skin:
-
Your tattoo artist will apply the second skin immediately after completing the tattoo.
-
This film stays on for 24 to 48 hours, depending on the artist's recommendation.
-
The film will protect your tattoo from bacteria, dirt, and friction.
First Removal and Cleaning:

-
After the first 24 to 48 hours, carefully remove the film. It’s normal to see fluid build-up under the film.
-
Wash your hands thoroughly before touching the tattoo.
-
Gently wash the tattoo with lukewarm water and mild, unscented soap. Do not scrub.
-
Pat the tattoo dry with a clean paper towel or let it air dry.
Applying a New Second Skin:
-
If your artist provided additional second skin patches, you can apply a new piece after cleaning the tattoo.
-
Ensure the skin is dry before applying the new film.
-
Leave the new film on for 3 to 6 days, depending on the artist's recommendation.
During the Healing Process:
-
Avoid submerging the tattoo in water (baths, swimming pools, hot tubs) while wearing the second skin.
-
Avoid exposing the tattoo to direct sunlight.
-
If the film starts to peel or come off, you can trim the edges or apply a new patch if needed.
After Removing the Second Skin:
-
Once the second skin is removed, continue to care for your tattoo by applying a thin layer of fragrance-free moisturizer (Aveeno or Lubriderm) several times a day.
-
Avoid picking at any peeling skin or scabs.
Signs of Infection:
Watch for signs of infection such as redness, swelling, pus, or increasing pain. If you notice any of these symptoms, contact your tattoo artist or a healthcare professional.
Using a second skin can make the healing process more comfortable and protect your tattoo better than traditional methods, but always follow your tattoo artist’s specific instructions for the best results.
